Chicago, IL – The Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicked off with a bang this week as thousands of protesters descended on Union Park. The gathering was not just about the upcoming election but about a much larger cause: pro-Palestine activism. For many, this wasn’t just another protest. They fought hard to be within “sight and sound” of the United Center, the convention's main venue. Their goal? The Staunch Non-Voters
But not everyone is so conflicted. Nijma, a 25-year-old Palestinian American, has made up her mind. “No one’s going to help our people back home,” she said flatly. “I don’t think we’re voting at all.”
Jeff Alian, a 62-year-old who’s been here long enough to remember when disco was cool, has also had it. “Two-thirds of my life I’ve lived here, but I’m against supporting the genocide of my people. I’m done voting for these clowns,” he said, handing out “Abandon Harris ’24” signs.
The Reluctant Supporters

Tracy Richardson, a 60-year-old from Berkeley, is one such person. “I’m an environmentalist at heart,” she explained, adjusting her “Harris 2024 For the People” hat. “I’m not happy about Gaza, but not voting for Kamala would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face!”
Nadine Seiler, another protester, agreed but with a twist. Holding a sign that read “Trump’s Project 2025, Agenda 47” on one side and “Trump & J.D. Are WEIRD” on the other, she’s motivated by fear. “As a Black woman in America, not voting isn’t an option. We can’t boycott the system right now—it’s the only one we’ve got!”

In a case that sounds more like a plot twist than real life, a Buford man, Jaiden Williams, 20, is set to spend the rest of his days behind bars after a botched robbery attempt in 2021. Williams, who was just 17 at the time, tried to rob then 17-year-old Orbit Pough III over what was supposed to be a simple exchange for a THC vape cartridge. Spoiler alert: it didn’t go well.
On Thursday, a Gwinnett County jury threw the book at Williams, convicting him on multiple charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was also found guilty of criminal attempt to commit a felony—which, let’s be honest, didn’t turn out too well for him.
So, here’s how the drama unfolded: Williams and Pough agreed to meet in a Kroger parking lot in Grayson for the exchange. However, Williams showed up with no cash but a loaded gun—never a good combo. During the trial, Williams claimed he and Pough were pals, but prosecutors quickly debunked that, proving the two were, in fact, strangers.
Now, get this—Williams said he shot Pough because he thought the guy looked "suspicious." (Honestly, if you’re planning to rob someone, everyone’s gonna look suspicious!) But things didn’t go according to plan. Pough, who also had a gun, managed to shoot Williams in the neck before succumbing to his injuries. The bullet left Williams paralyzed from the waist down—a permanent reminder that crime really doesn’t pay.
“The victim’s family suffered a tragic loss,” said District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson. “The defendant was only 17 years old when he took the victim’s life. This sentence will be a long and hard lesson for him to learn from. But we simply cannot tolerate our young people following such violent paths.”
Williams was handed a life sentence with the possibility of parole, plus five years on probation. It’s a harsh but fitting end to a crime that had no winners, only lessons learned—some the hard way.
